Protecting the Claremont Hotel, a Bay Area Landmark Since 1915
  • Home
The Claremont Hotel, built between 1905 and 1915 and located in Oakland, CA, still stands today as a visible landmark in the San Francisco Bay Area and is one of the last remaining garden hotels in America. It is a designated City of Oakland Landmark, a listed California State Historical Resource and has been deemed eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places by the Keeper of the National Register since 2003 (see NRHP registration form here). The Claremont historic site includes the hotel building and 12.1  surrounding acres.

A landmark under attack

Proposed Development

The stunningly iconic Claremont Hotel is threatened by developers trying to skirt California Historic Landmark protections in order to build a modern condoplex with underground parking on the Hotel's protected 12.1 acre grounds.

The Claremont Preservation Coalition formed to protect this beloved neighborhood jewel, by ensuring all relevant laws and protections are respected by developers and the City of Oakland, and that development plans are not approved without full and proper reviews to enforce appropriate historical and environmental protections.

The Hotel truly sets the character of the East Bay that we love and live in, and we believe it is critical to protect its grandeur for current and future residents and visitors to enjoy.

The full project proposal is available on the Oakland City's website
here.

We're fighting this

We and others have registered our concerns with the City of Oakland Planning Commission and the Landmark Preservation Advisory Board.

See Claremont Preservation Coalition letters of concern to-date below.

"In sum, the HREs represent an improper strategy to re-define and minimize significant features of the Project setting— to unjustifiably substitute new, far more restrictive boundaries to the existing protected areas of the Claremont property which were—and remain—listed as a California Historical Resource worthy of protection and respect."

A legacy of Community support

Neighbors of the claremont have been standing up to developers for decades to protect the glorious landmark that defines the historic Claremont district of berkeley/oakland.

The current developers are hoping to skirt the protections of historical designations and Landmark status with a project that threatens the integrity of this famous property.
